In this article I discuss:
- How social-networking evolved to its present form?
- What is social-network-aggregation?
- Tools you can use to work with multiple social-networks in real-time.
Once upon a time there were few social-networking tools. The use and need was limited and creating social-networks was considered a leisure activity. Targeted to find lost friends or old classmates, social-networking tools, like Orkut, soon gained popularity. Later more tools evolved like facebook and twitter. Facebook did include some additional services while twitter presented a simple new concept.
Gradually these tools, specially facebook and twitter, gained popularity in the business segment. People realized the true power of these tools and started using them to mark their web-presence. On one hand, celebrities started using them to keep their fans updated with their hourly musings, on the other hand, businesses started using them as marketing tools. With the right use of twitter, some companies were able to increase their revenues. Twitter revolutionized the entire social-networking world. It also initiated a new concept called as "social-media marketing".
Facebook and twitter provided API, a code that you can integrate in your own application to connect to these services. This open API market further revolutionized the social-networking world. Even more tools appeared with some added flavors. The easy availability of APIs, enabled other services to provide options to their users to connect with facebook and twitter. This API integration facilitated simultaneous updates on a variety of social-networking sites and also collecting content from multiple services. This is termed as "social network aggregation".
